The Cowichan Valley Regional District Board is worried the province hasn’t done enough testing at a contaminated soil dump in Shawnigan Lake.
The CVRD Director for Shawnigan Lake Sonia Furstenau says the Board recently sent a letter outlining their concerns to Environment Minister Mary Polak.
She says more rigorous testing must be done to see if there is anything in the soil below the top 15 centimetres already tested. She says you can’t take any chances when it comes to people’s drinking water.
Furstenau says they decided to urge the Ministry for further testing after finding out it didn’t study any core samples, despite evidence from MLA Andrew Weaver showing higher levels of heavy metals.
