BC Premier David Eby calls the latest softwood lumber decision from the United States a massive threat.
The decision from the US Department of Commerce would see more than double anti-dumping duties imposed on Canadian softwood lumber exporters sometime this year.
Eby says they denounce this announcement.
“B.C. has long maintained that any and all duties on softwood lumber are unjustified, and these anti-dumping duties are based on a biased calculation – one that has been criticized by many of the United States’ trading partners,” said Eby.
“The U.S. Department of Commerce’s announcement today will impact all Canadian companies selling lumber to the United States, when and if the decision is confirmed later this summer.”
He says the decision could result in American homes being more expensive to build, while BC workers bear the brunt of the duties.
This announcement comes as President Donald Trump announces his 25 percent tariff on all Canadian goods entering the United States would take effect on midnight.
Eby adds the government will work to defend residents’ jobs and the services relied on by communities.
