Two confirmed dead after early morning collision with semi on Highway 19

RCMP remain on the scene of a fatal collision after a car went through a red light at Highway 19 and Jingle Pot Road in Nanaimo early this morning.

Police say emergency crews were called to the scene around 4:00 a.m. They say the collision happened when the driver of a car made a left-hand turn through the intersection on a red light, and was impacted by a southbound semi-trailer.

According to police, both the driver and passenger of the car died at the scene and have not been identified.

They add a joint investigation is being conducted by the RCMP General Investigative Unit, the Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstructive Service, and the BC Coroner Service.

DriveBC says both directions of Highway 19 are closed off until further notice.
