City of Duncan offers food in lieu of fines program for parking

If you have received a parking ticket in the City of Duncan you might be able to skip the payment, but only if you provide a food donation.

A decision was made by council to approve the policy which would be in effect annually from Dec. 15 to 31 and the city says it’s not only to help out those in need but to create a positive aura in Duncan.

“This policy is intended to promote community spirit, demonstrate social responsibility, encourage compliance, and reduce dispute over parking tickets,” a staff report says.

The policy was initially adopted in 1988, and the updated version states donations in lieu of fines must be received within 14 days of the ticket issue date.

“Food donations in lieu of paying parking fines issued during the period of Dec. 15 to 31 must be received within 14 days of the issued date, up to Jan. 15 of the following year,” the report says.

The policy is designed to promote community spirit, support the food bank, build trust and grow the city’s partnership with local non-profits and social service organizations.
