Sooke man receives six years in jail for killing 7-year-old girl

A 49-year-old man will face six years in jail for causing the death of a child while operating a vehicle under the influence of methamphetamines.

Matthew Darlington was sentenced on Nov. 5, after evidence was presented from Sooke RCMP in an investigation stemming from the initial call on Sept. 7, 2021, where they received reports of a single-vehicle collision.

According to police, emergency services were called out and found multiple people with serious injuries in the 5800 block of Sooke Road, which claimed the life of a 7-year-old and sent four to hospital.

Police say the vehicle in question was travelling southbound on Sooke Road when it struck a concrete curb near a bus stop before striking a tree.
