West Coast rivers flooding, rest of Island still on flood watch

Last night’s storm has left West Coast rivers swollen to dangerous levels.

The River Forecast Centre has issued a Flood Warning for west Vancouver Island, including rivers around Tofino, Bamfield and Port Renfrew and surrounding areas. The public is advised to stay clear of these fast-flowing rivers and potentially unstable riverbanks.

The flooding has caused a washout on the highway to Port Renfrew, and Drive BC reports Highway 14 is closed in both directions west of the Jordan River, with no fix expected until at least Sunday.

On the Island’s east coast and on the Sunshine Coast a flood watch warning is still in effect, that means river levels are rising and may exceed their banks. Flooding of areas adjacent to affected rivers may also occur.

Drive BC is also reporting water pooling on sections of Highway 19 from north of Campbell River to south of Nanaimo.
