Island lake featured in British museum’s international wildlife photo contest winner

A Vancouver Island lake is featured in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year Award in the British Natural History Museum’s 60th anniversary photo contest.

Marine conservation photojournalist Shane Gross beat out more than 59,000 entries from around the world with his photo of western toad tadpoles in Cedar Lake, which is northwest of Campbell River. He calls it “The Swarm of Life.”

Gross captured the image by snorkeling for several hours in the lake, being careful not to disturb the lakebed or algae, to capture his perfect shot.

His photo will be on display at the museum in London starting on Friday, along with other entries from this year and from previous years’ contests.
