Liberal Caucus Urged to Follow Through on National Youth Climate Corp

The Climate Emergency Unit, the Nanaimo Climate Action Hub, and others concerned about the Liberal record on Climate Change gathered outside the federal caucus meeting in Nanaimo this morning to sell lemonade.

Erin Blondeau of the Climate Emergency Unit says they also offered coffee and tea in an effort to help the Liberal government come up with $1-Billion funding to follow through on creating a National Youth Climate Corps.

Blondeau says the Liberal’s track record on climate has not been great despite a small “spark of hope” created by a very small mention of consultations for a youth climate corp in the last federal budget.

She says the Climate Emergency Unit and other climate groups, along young people were excited to see that even though it was just a few sentences.

She says the changing climate, along with the high cost of living and affordable housing are big concerns for young people.

Blondeau says a National Youth Climate Corp would help provide solutions to some of issues youth are concerned about, such as renewable energy and habitat restoration, as well as providing job training and employment.

They hope to engage ministers and MPs in a conversation about a transformative program that would provide training for young people in retro-fitting buildings, ecosystem maintenance, climate emergency preparedness and response.

They will be agt the Vancouver Island Convention Centre from 8 am to 10:30 am.
