Orca calf ‘Brave Little Hunter’ possibly spotted in Friendly Cove

A new video of a young killer whale is believed to be the 2-year-old calf that was trapped in a Vancouver Island lagoon this spring.

This comes from Bay Cetology in a Facebook post this week, with the video from Karina Halle showing the whale approaching her in Friendly Cove.

They say while it’s not possible to verify the whale’s identity, based on the size, location, and behavior, they do believe it’s the calf known as Brave Little Hunter.

They add this comes after providing an update on the 2-year-old, saying they had no further sightings of any lone killer whales around Esperanza Inlet or the west coast of the island.

Earlier this year, the calf was trapped in a lagoon near Zeballos from March to April after its mother died. It swam free during a high tide in late April.
