March is “Fraud Awareness Month” across Canada, and North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP have one they want you to be aware of.
They say a Cowichan Valley resident got in touch recently to report he’d been called by a stranger with a Southeast Asian accent.
The caller claimed the man had won 2 million dollars and a Mercedes Benz. The bold scammer even asked the man if he liked the colour white.
The man wasn’t sucked in and when he refused to give personal information or send 299 dollars the line went dead.
RCMP say they’re hoping the story will help others spot the scam.
“We are hoping if enough people read about this and create a dialogue, that more of our citizens will keep a close and personal relationship with their hard earned dollars and they won’t end up in the hands of someone else. Remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it is,” says Cpl. Krista Hobday.
RCMP are also reminding people to make a habit to check out the Canadian Anti Fraud Centre’s website.
