Ferry Commissioner OKs LNG retrofit for Spirit Class ships

The Ferries Commissioner is giving BC Ferries the go-ahead to convert the two Spirit Class ships to duel fuel engines when they go in for their mid-life re-fits.

The Spirit of Vancouver Island’s refit is set for late 2016. The Spirit of British Columbia will go into dry-dock in the fall of 2017.

Just last week, amid more controversy over fuel surcharges, BC Ferries CEO Mike Corrigan said they were keen to make the ships LNG capable.

In addition to the dual-fuel conversions for the Spirit Class ships, Ferries is also building three dual-fuel ships. They’re expected to come into service in 2016 and 2017 on the Southern Gulf Islands and Powell River – Comox routes.
