Nurses rally against CDMR in Nanaimo

It’s been one year since 26 nurses at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital were replaced by unlicensed care aides and today nurses took to the streets in protest.

The BC Nurses Union has been calling on Island Health to reverse the Care Delivery Model Redesign (CDMR) since it was implemented.

BCNU President Gayle Duteil spoke to a crowd of more than 150 nurses in Diana Krall Plaza. She said she toured Nanaimo’s hospital on Sunday and witnessed the impact of CDMR firsthand.

Duteil says CDMR has meant the loss of over 48,000 hours of direct nursing care, which she says puts patients at risk.

The BCNU is calling on Island Health to return staffing levels to what they were before CDMR kicked in at NRGH. They’re continuing to collect signatures through an online petition, asking Island Health to put CDMR on hold and subject it to an independent review.
