The Cowichan Tribes say they released their 2014 financial information last week and it can be found on their website.
According to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, Leaders of the Cowichan Tribes and Halalt First Nation didn’t meet a deadline to file on July 29th and about half of the Aboriginal chiefs and councilors in the valley allegedly didn’t file their salaries with the federal government.
Cowichan Tribes’ Chief William Seymour says they DID file and explains why their statements could not be released to Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada by the deadline.
A 2013 law called the First Nations Financial Transparency Act requires all bands to post online their audited financial statements for the last fiscal year.
