Financial Windfall To Benefit Education System, Indigenous Students

The government has provided the education system in the province with an additional five hundred million dollars in resources.
Education Minister, Rob Fleming responded to a report onĀ education for high-risk children and youth who are in the care of the provincial government.
He calls “improving outcomes for Indigenous students the top priority for this government,” adding that closing the gap between Indigenous students and their peers in the school system has to be a priority.
Fleming says the Christy Clark government grossly underfunded the education system and the current government isĀ committed to improving how education is rolled out in B.C.

The half a billion dollars in funding is earmarked for additional counseling resources, more one-on-one support, and hiring more teachers than the province has seen in generations.

Universities and colleges are onboard with eliminating tuition barriers for Indigenous students in the care of the province.
However, theseĀ tuition waivers and supports won’t work if Indigenous students don’t get better grades inĀ school.
