The BC Coroners Service responded to six drowning incidents in the past week, including ones involving swimming, boating and falls from a height.
BC Adventure Smart Coordinator Sandra Riches says a good tip to staying safe on the water is making yourself as visible as possible.
Riches also recommends planning ahead and asking questions like “Will I have cell phone coverage?” or “What’s the best way out in case of an emergency?” She says a safe practice is to also be aware of your surroundings and keeping an eye out for anyone who may need help.
A fatal drowning was reported in Nanaimo, while one man had a close call in the Cowichan River. There have also been numerous incidents reported at Thetis Lake near Victoria.
