The Cowichan Housing Association has been working closely with community partners to try and develop a coordinated effort toward the goal of safe, affordable housing for everyone.
Executive Director Terri Dame says they’ve recently held a series of workshops to examine different housing coalition models in BC, and hear from the public on what a Cowichan Coalition should look like. Dame says they received recommendations on what the functions of the coalition would be.
Dame says they also found people wanted the coalition to be regional in scope, and work across municipal boundaries.
The “Home Team” which is made up of Cowichan Housing Association, Social Planning Cowichan, Our Cowichan Communities Health Network, Mental Health and Substance Use Collective Impact Team, United Way, and Cowichan Division of Family Practice, hosted a workshop most recently with presentations from the Victoria Coalition to End Homelessness, the Capital Regional District, and the City of Nanaimo.
Dames says they are also making strides in other areas as well.
