Local fire departments usually use this time of year, when we change our clocks, to remind residents to change smoke alarm batteries as well.
Umesh Lal, with the Nanaimo Fire Department says crews still arrive at fires and find no working smoke alarms in place…..
These days there are alarms that have ten year batteries and once that time period is up the whole unit should be replaced.
Some alarms are hardwired and don’t need batteries. Lal says, either way, smoke alarms should be vacumed onece a month so the dust doesn’t accumulate.
