The old maple tree will live to see another day, after members on the Island Saving Centre Commission voted to postponeĀ a decision until they have more information.
Staff will look into getting an independent arborist to provide a second opinion on the health of the tree, with permission to release that report to the public before a final decision is made. Committee members are also interested in knowing the costs of securing the tree and ongoing maintenance costs, as well as the cost of changing the design of the parking lot if the tree stays.
The tree was scheduled to be cut down after an arborist deemed the tree unsafe, but since then, community members have been protesting to save the tree, calling it an important part of Duncan’s history.
