Standoff between police, armed man in Chemainus ends without injury

Police were busy in Chemainus on Thursday afternoon.

They were called out around 4:30 to a report of a man with a knife on the roof of the Health Care Auxiliary Thrift Shop.

Police sealed the area and a number of emergency crews were on scene.

Several streets around the shop were blocked off during what turned into a four hour standoff.

RCMP say they blocked off the area because of concerns over the public’s safety, and because the armed man could have harmed himself.

The standoff ended around 8:30 when police managed to talk the man down.

He was not injured but was taken to hospital by ambulance for a mental health assessment.
