Nanaimo Regional General Hospital is now offering Naloxone kits for people that may be at risk of overdosing from opioids.
Medical Health Officer Dr. Paul Hasselback says the life-saving kits have been introduced as a response to an increase in overdoses from drugs like fentanyl.
He says staff are trained to show users and their families how to use the antidote. Hasselback says there is still one group that officials are worried about.
Hasselback says 350 kits have already been distributed across the island and about 800 people have been trained to use them.
