The BC Supreme Court is hearing arguments this week in the Cowichan Valley Regional District’s case against South Island Aggregates.
The CVRD wants the court to uphold its view that the zoning of the company’s Shawnigan Lake property does not allow it to operate a contaminated soil dump, despite having provincial permits.
The issue also came up at the Legislature Monday, where Cowichan Valley MLA Bill Routley urged the government to take a closer look at the allegations in the case filed by the Shawnigan Residents Association.
“If they’re true,” he says. “Significant jiggery-pokery has taken place, in the sense that this government, without question, has been involved in signing off on a plan. I think that in this case, the government was lied to.”
The BC Supreme Court hearing on the CVRD case is expected to last all week… it’s not clear when the court will issue a ruling.
