An investigation into the death of a man near Shawnigan Lake and says officers weren’t responsible for the incident.
The report says Vancouver Police were investigating two members of the Central Saanich Police Service (CSPS), in October, who were later arrested on Dec. 17 but released from custody.
“They were released from custody later that day and taken home, following a mental health assessment,” the report says.
According to the report, the RCMP were called to the scene of a deceased man on Dec. 18, 2024, in a rural area near Shawnigan Lake and was later determined the man was from the CSPS who were released the day before.
RCMP said at the time that the death was self-inflicted.
Once the incident was reported the IIO quickly went to work to investigate and see what happened, but they added after a lengthy investigation there was no cause to refer charges to the BC Prosecution Service.
“The Chief Civilian Director has reviewed the evidence, including witness statements, police documentation, medical records and CCTV footage,” the report says. “They determined there is no indication that there was neglect in duty to care, and no reasonable grounds to believe any officer may have committed an offence.”
The investigation is now closed.
