Cowichan Valley transit workers head to Victoria to rally, strike continues for eight weeks

Transit in the Cowichan Valley has been at a standstill for over eight weeks, and now the union representing workers says they’re taking their demands to Victoria.

Transdev says they’ve been pushing for access to bathrooms, basic working conditions, wages, and reasonable break times since the strike began on Feb. 8 and so far, demands haven’t been met.

Unifor National president Lana Payne says these demands are simple and a human right.

“Sanitation and access to restrooms are a basic human right,” she says. “Our members’ strike is about basic working conditions, which are critical to deliver the public transit services they provide to the community of Cowichan.”

A rally is scheduled for Apr. 14 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at BC Transit Conventional Headquarters in Victoria.

According to a media release, Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector representing 320,000 workers in every major area of the economy.
