City of Duncan starts construction on 21 new parking spaces

Parking in Duncan is sparse, and more spaces are needed, and that is what the city is looking to do as they start construction on a new lot on Third Street.

According to the city, a new parking lot is currently being constructed at 177 Third Street where they intend on converting the property into a gravel pay parking facility to improve the downtown.

“That will improve access to downtown for residents and visitors, supporting local businesses and community events,” the city says.

Mayor Michelle Staples says the intention is to improve the overall downtown experience and make it more accessible, along with providing an abundance of new spaces.

“The downtown area serves as the vibrant heart of our community, and this project is an example of our commitment to improving urban functionality while safeguarding and preserving our tree canopy wherever possible,” she says. “We also get an additional 21 new spaces in walking distance of businesses within the outside of the downtown core, all achieved in an environmentally responsible and cost-effective manner.”

According to the city, the site will retain all existing trees on the site, and careful grading will help maintain natural soil levels, ensuring the topsoil doesn’t exceed 10 centimetres above the roots.
