New housing spaces for women and children leaving violence are now open in BC.
The BC Government says 229 spaces have been opened across Vancouver Island and Metro Vancouver, with the goal of giving those leaving violence a fresh start through safe and secure housing.
$98 million was invested for the spaces, which include transition beds for residents to stay in for 30 days, and second-stage units with longer days for those needing stable housing.
Parliamentary Secretary for Gender Equity Jennifer Blatherwick says increasing safety and support for survivors is a key priority for the province.
“Having places for women, children and 2SLGBTQIA+ people to go to after leaving violent situations is vital, especially at a time when they need it the most,” said Blatherwick.
Of the spaces, 130 come from Vancouver Island, with 33 second-stage units located in Kw’i Lelum (Rise House) in Duncan. Nanaimo has 30 second-stage units and 17 transition beds, with 50 transition beds in West Shore.
