RCMP Highway Patrol say several charges were laid during a month-long campaign to educate drivers on what to do when see an emergency vehicle pulled over.
The ‘Slow Down and Move Over’ campaign saw more than 450 tickets issued province-wide last month and Superintendent Mike Coyle says the campaign was conducted to make sure emergency workers are kept safe and secure.
“Multiple targeted operations throughout the province were conducted to make the highways more secure for emergency responders and maintenance workers, ensuring they safely end their shift and return home to their loved ones,” he says. “More than 450 tickets were issued, but the real point was education and awareness.”
Police say with the campaign over, BC Highway Patrol is encouraging everyone to continue following the 70/40 rule, which means if the speed limit is 80 km or higher, then drivers must slow down to 70 km or less. Also, if the speed limit is below 80, then drivers must slow down to 40 or less.
Police say those who fail to obey this law can face a $173 violation ticket.
