The Town of Ladysmith has a new mayor-elect, and she says it’s time to bring local government back to its grassroots and restore fiscal responsibility.
Deena Beeston was elected on Mar. 1 with 854 votes over four other candidates, and she says the results sent her a clear message on what Ladysmith residents want.
“I think it’s indicative residents are interested in moving in a different direction,” she says. “I want to involve the people that make up our community in a lot more governance,” she says.
Beeston says the community was built on the backs of community members and it should be the community who has the final say and a voice going forward.
“Our community was built by community members,” she says. “They made the first hospital, built the health unit, built the park. Everything comes from the people, so I think they should have a voice in the community.”
Beeston says she hopes to hit the ground running and deliver what Ladysmith needs after she is sworn in on Mar. 18.
According to the town, there was a 22.3 per cent voter turnout for the mayoral by-election race.
