Recent snow creates dangerous avalanche conditions in Island, Sunshine Coast backcountry

With fresh snow on the hills, the avalanche danger in Vancouver Island mountains has increased to the treeline, prompting warnings from Avalanche Canada.

The agency says fresh snow sits over unusually unstable surfaces, creating dangerous avalanche conditions. Stick to simple terrain and avoid overhead hazards while out in the back country this weekend.

The danger is ranked as “considerable” for today in the alpine and treeline areas, and “moderate” below the treeline. Travellers should use caution, be prepared, and avoid freshly wind-loaded terrain.

On the Sunshine Coast, the danger in alpine and treeline zones is high today, and considerable below the treeline. Back-country travellers should avoid all avalanche terrain today, the danger will drop to considerable sometime tomorrow.
