53 impaired driving prohibitions issued on Vancouver Island in December

BC Highway Patrol has completed its annual Winter Impaired Driving Campaign across the province.

Vancouver Island had the second most prohibitions issued for a region in the province with 53 in December, only the Southeast Central region had more with 81.

Acting officer in charge of BC Highway Patrol Mike Coyle said enforcement is necessary to follow up on after education.

“The Winter Impaired Driving Campaign clearly shows that education is not enough for people who choose to drive while impaired.”

On average, 8.61 impaired drivers were taken off the road a day, implying a driver was caught every three hours for 31 days.

The campaign is a province wide initiative to support National Impaired Driving Prevention Month and features increased enforcement through check stops and patrols.

It’s the second busiest month for impaired driving in B.C. and follows the Summer Impaired Driving Campaign which runs from June to August.
