Vancouver Island snowpack levels near the top of the province in latest report

Despite the province still being below normal levels, Vancouver Island’s snowpack is doing well after recent struggles.

In the monthly Snow Survey and Water Supply Bulletin, Vancouver Island claimed the second highest snowpack level as of January 1, 2025, sitting at 117 per cent of normal value.

It’s a stark rise from the same report one year ago, which saw it sitting at 39 per cent of normal value, a 78 per cent decline.

Recent rainstorms at lower elevations across the Island have benefitted higher elevations, which received snow.

Only the Lower Thompson area has a higher percentage, sitting at 133 per cent of normal levels, a nearly 100 per cent increase from last January’s report.

The province remains below average, however, sitting 13 per cent below the normal level.

Despite remaining below the average, the province has made progress from this time last year when it sat 56 per cent below the normal level, a 31 per cent increase.

The next snow report is expected to be released on February 10, 2025.
