Sayward ridge eyed for wind power potential by Quebec company

A Quebec-based power company wants to build a wind farm on a ridge near Sayward.

Boralex has applied to the province for an investigative licence for the project, with the aim of expanding the farm to generate 200 megawatts of power or more, if it proves to be a good location. In comparison, the hydro dam on the Campbell River generates 132 megawatts.

The first step for the company is to install up to three 60-metre towers to measure and record wind speeds, to figure out if a wind farm would be viable. That work will begin this spring, if the licence is granted.

The company says it’s interested in the site because of its wind potential, close proximity to the highway, and potential to hook up to the nearby BC Hydro power grid.
