The RCMP says a charge of manslaughter has now been laid in connection with the death of a newborn child a year ago in Ladysmith.
On December 27, 2023, an unresponsive baby was delivered at a private residence in Ladysmith, and died on January 6, 2024, at hospital.
On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, the RCMP arrested and charged 77-year old Gloria Lemay with manslaughter.
The RCMP says the charge follows a complex investigation involving the Ministry of Children and Family Development, the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, and the BC Coroners Service.
Nearly a year ago, on January 31, 2024, the BC Colleges of Nurses and Midwives issued a statement to say that Gloria Lemay of Duncan was not a registrant of the college and was not permitted to perform the services of a midwife.
The college also stated that in February of 2000, a court order permanently prohibited Lemay from acting as a midwife.
