Be aware of avalanche threat before heading into the backcountry

Avalanche Canada reports a skier suffered a minor injury to their hand when they triggered an avalanche on New Year’s Day in the backcountry near Mount Washington.

A report on the Avalanche Canada website says one person skiing in a group of three was caught in the slide but was not buried.

The avalanche is described as a very soft storm slab with a 15 centimetre fracture height and a width of 47 metres.

The incident happened at 2:15pm Wednesday afternoon.

Avalanche Canada says the threat of avalanches in the backcountry of Vancouver Island is currently rated as moderate.
