Groups that work with immigrants and refugees have been trying to keep up with the growing number of local residents who want to find a way to help with the refugee migrant crisis in Europe.
The Cowichan Intercultural Society held an information session Sunday night, and the Cowichan Action Circle of Amnesty International has one set up for Wednesday at 7pm at the Duncan United Church.
Immigration consultant Marianne Van Der Meij was one of the speakers at Sunday’s meeting.
“Canada’s response, so far, has been quite meager,” she says. “But the private sponsorship option is a way people can, perhaps, bring refugees to Canada and not be dependent on the federal government.”
Van Der Meij says in the short term, people should donate money for humanitarian relief in places like Syria.
The federal government announced on the weekend, it will match “eligible” donations, up to a total of 100 million dollars
