Winter storms leave Island mountains avalanche-prone this weekend

Avalanche conditions on Vancouver Island are currently a considerable risk, according to the latest forecast from Avalanche Canada.

The conditions are uncertain after the latest round of winter storms. An island-wide large avalanche cycle took place during the height of the Christmas storm.

With not enough new information since then, the organization is advising caution for anyone out in the Island’s alpine regions. It says strong southwest winds have been moving dry snow at higher elevations into wind slabs that may still react to a human trigger today.

On the bright side, conditions are expected to improve this week, with alpine risks at moderate on Monday and risks at the treeline low by Tuesday.
