The first half of the 2024-25 school year in SD79 has turned out to be even busier than expected for Nourish Cowichan.
Fatima da Silva says they had expected a higher demand for student lunches and snacks at schools in the Cowichan Valley in September, but it has proven to be more than estimated.
She says they estimated there would be a need for 2500 to 2600 lunches, but are now preparing about 3000 meals for students each day.
Da Silva says they have also seen an increase in the weekend food bags for students to take home, increasing from about five hundred last year to nearly 550 per week this year.
The Sun FM Stuff the Truck is underway at the Duncan Save on Food throughout the week, and Da Silva says donations made during the fundraising event each December have a lasting impact throughout the year for the recipients of the food and money raised.
Donors can purchase a pallet of food to help stock the shelves at the Cowichan Basket Society food bank and help Nourish Cowichan provide meals and snacks for schools.
Stuff the Truck has a new recipient this year, the Cowichan Green Community’s Seniors program Meals on Wheels.
