As we head into the month of December, British Columbians are divided on when to decorate for the holidays.
That comes from a new survey done by BC Hydro, finding that more than half of British Columbians choose to put lights and holiday decorations in November.
The survey finds nearly three-quarters of residents plan to decorate their homes for the holidays this year, but there is no consensus on when is it the right time to start decorating.
Hydro says while 86 percent of people think decorating anytime before December 1 is too early, 51 percent start decorating in November.
“Almost half agree any time before Remembrance Day is premature, but one in 10 said there is no such thing as too early where holiday decorating is concerned,” said Hydro.
“When it comes to holiday decorating, almost a third said when they see holiday lighting and décor go up early in their neighbourhood, it makes them feel ‘joyful,’ however about 15 per cent find it annoying.”
They say a mix of white and coloured lights are the preferred lighting for the holidays, with mostly three to five strings of light. But almost 10 percent of decorators put up 10 strands of lights, according to the survey.
With some lighting decorations costing more money and using more power, BC Hydro has tips for how to lower lighting use while decorating this coming season.
They recommend switching to LED lights, which saves you $40, using timers, and using MrHydro to know how much the decorating is affecting your electricity.
