Indigenous elders at VIU honoured with Coronation medals

Three female Indigenous elders have been honoured with medals from the king for their work with Vancouver Island University as culture keepers.

Earlier this month Geraldine Manson, one of VIU’s Elders in Residence, was presented with a King Charles III Coronation Medal along with Florence James, a retired elder. Grace Elliott-Nielsen was also presented with a medal for her work with VIU and as executive director of the Tillicum Lelum Friendship Centre.

They were nominated for the medals by former Nanaimo-North Cowichan MLA Doug Routley, who presented them along with Nanaimo-Ladysmith NDP MP Lisa Marie Barron.

Visit VIU’s website for more information about the elders, their work, and why they were selected for the awards.
