Island hospital drug site plans put on hold after Eby’s about-face

Island Health was planning to build overdose prevention sites at three Vancouver Island hospitals, but stopped abruptly in April, according to leaked internal documents.

Information obtained by Filter Magazine shows Island Health was planning to set up overdose prevention services with tents and vans outside the Nanaimo, Victoria, and Campbell River hospitals. The project, a directive of Island Health, had been in the works with meetings and detailed planning going on since last year.

However, after Premier David Eby backtracked on drug decriminalization in April, the project was abruptly put on hold.

Island Health has referred all questions to the provincial health ministry, which has refused to confirm whether or not the project will resume.
