This long weekend marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. While participating in events around the Valley you can revisit a beloved local bagel shop that has re-opened as a Community Benefit organization.Â
Formerly called Island Bagel, now named Island Bagel and Bannock is an Indigenous-run for-profit business whose proceeds will go towards the Quw’utsun’ Cultural Connections Society.Â
The space has been renovated and we are waiting excitedly to add First Nations art, language and new menu items as we set up over the next couple of months,” said the shop’s new owners.
They add the whole goal of the shop is to focus “on fostering connections and building bridges between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities, creating a welcoming and safe space for everyone to gather.”
Their grand opening kicks off September 28th at 10:00 am at their Station Street location and 10% of the proceeds from that day will go towards the Cowichan Tribes Elders Program. Â
