Island Chinook a bright spot in grim State of Salmon report

Overall salmon abundance continues to decline up and down the coast, but some regional stocks are showing signs of recovery.

That’s from the 2024 State of Salmon report published by the Pacific Salmon Foundation this week. It shows that more than 70% of all stocks are showing long-term declines in terms of spawning fish abundance.

On the bright side, Vancouver Island Chinook salmon are showing above-average numbers in recent years, and so are pink salmon in most regions. Fraser River coho salmon are also starting to bounce back.

However chum salmon and steelhead in all regions are in decline on this coast and around the entire Pacific Rim. Sockeye are above average in about half their regions.
