Stay vigilant and aware while driving, province of BC

Long weekend travel means busy highways, congestion and sometimes frustrated motorists, which is why the province is offering some safety tips as you end your holiday travel.

According to the province, being alert and aware of your surroundings is how everyone is going to stay safe, whether they are pedestrians, motorists, or even if you are on the waterways.

They say being patient and respectful is always good practice.

“Keep an eye out for large trucks and motorcycles,” they say. “Large trucks require additional space to stop, turn and have significant blind spots.

“Passenger vehicle drivers can help reduce the risk of serious crashes by giving trucks ample room and avoid cutting into their turning lane or braking space.”

They’re also suggesting proper safety precautions should be taken, including wearing proper clothing, allowing extra time to get to your destination, planning for emergencies, avoid distractions, and always obeying posted speed limits.

According to the BC Coroners Service, 331 motor vehicle-related deaths occurred in BC, and of those 45 occurred in July, 32 in August, and 33 in September.
