Allenby Road scheduled to partially reopen next month

Allenby Road in Duncan is expected to open next month, and the province says they’re looking at options to make sure it stays open.

The road was closed in 2021 after slope instability and risk to driver safety increased when an atmospheric river flooding event forced its closure.

The province says they’re taking it step-by-step to ensure driver safety and make sure they have a long-term plan to reopen it fully.

“The road is expected to open to single-lane-alternating traffic in September with initial,” they say. “Initial clearing and prep work has started for the installation of a 75-metre-long lock-block wall to be placed within the lane closest to the slope for slide protection to ensure driver safety.

“With one lane open to drivers, temporary traffic-light signals will be placed on both ends of this section of Allenby Road to provide safe, 24/7 operation of single-lane-alternating stretch.”

The work is being done with the province and Cowichan Tribes to open the road, but the province says signage is always observed for increased safety.
