Break-in causes over $1,000 in estimated repairs for Duncan shop

A local shop says they have sustained another attack after vandals smashed a window and stole merchandise from their Duncan location.

Gold and Silver Guy manager Jeremey Daniels says this attack happened around 6:30 a.m. on Tuesday resulting in a smashed window and stolen merchandise.

“A homeless person pulled up with a shopping cart and grabbed an axe and smashed the window in,” he says. “Since we have security measures in place, he couldn’t get any further access into the store, but he was able to grab a few trinkets.

“They were sitting in the window and amount to roughly three dollars.”

Daniels says these attacks have taken a considerable toll on business and with the frequency of them it’s impossible for insurance to do anything about it.

“This is an immediate loss,” he says. “We already can’t get insured due to the fact we’ve experienced so many break ins. They won’t take the risk on us.

“Also, we’re such a liquid business it is hard to keep track of the inventory.”

He adds North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP have already closed the file on the vandalism due to lack of sufficient evidence.
