North Cowichan Council moved to write a letter to MOTI to show their support for a planned pedestrian overpass between Beverly and James Street near the new Quw’utsun Secondary School.
In March, Council expressed some concerns with the design and asked the province if they would instead consider an at-grade solution.
“There has been quite a bit of interaction between the ministry and the municipality with regards to the options for an at-grade solution,” said Mayor Rob Douglas at a recent council meeting.
He adds the ministry says a crossing that is not raised would cause issues with traffic congestion and safety.
At that same meeting, Council voted on whether to show their support for the project.
When discussed, Councilor Justice said he didn’t support the motion.
“MOTI has really not attempted to mitigate the concerns of North Cowichan residents, nor of our Council. I think this is a bad project that’s being imposed on us by the provincial government, I don’t think it’s good for us.”
MOTI says that with Council’s support, they can keep to their original timeline of completing the overpass by the spring of 2025.
