North Cowichan Receives New Housing Construction Target

North Cowichan is among the third group of priority communities in BC to receive its housing construction target from the province.

The government says more than 17,000 homes will be built in areas with the greatest housing needs.

The target for North Cowichan is 1,233 new homes in the next five years.

Minister of Housing, Ravi Kahlon, says they’re cooperating with municipalities to ensure more homes are built in communities where with the greatest need.

He says using these targets, all levels of government will be able to align to address the housing crisis and help build more affordable housing.

The new building targets represent a 58 per cent increase in overall housing to be built when compared to historical trends, based on 75 per cent of the province’s estimated housing need for each municipality.

Municipalities will be evaluated after six months, then every year, on their progress, and are encouraged to explore and strengthen partnerships with First Nations communities to meet their housing needs.

The Province’s Housing Supply Act came into effect in 2023.
