After decades of work, the K’Omoks First Nation is nearly ready to sign a treaty with the governments of Canada and British Columbia.
Negotiations have been ongoing since 1994, and in 2012, K’Omoks, Canada, and BC reached an agreement in principle. Since then, they have been engaging with local governments, industry, interest-holders, and people living in the region.
They are now planning to initial the treaty, the last step before an official vote and legal ratification.
The draft treaty will first be put to a vote by K’Omoks membership. If approved, it will go to the province to ratify it in the legislature, then to the federal government.
If ratified, the treaty would take effect in 2028.
