Coroner’s inquest deems fatal police shooting in Mill Bay a homicide

A four-day inquest into the death of Christopher Johnathan Bloomfield, who was fatally shot by police in Mill Bay, wrapped up last week.

On November 10, 2018, police were called to a residence in Mill Bay to follow up on a reported assault.

An RCMP report says that Bloomfield was armed with a knife and that police fired shots.

The aim of a Coroner’s inquest is not to establish fault but rather to make recommendations to prevent deaths in similar circumstances. An earlier investigation and report by the Independent Investigations Office found the officers were not at fault.

No officers were considered at fault for Bloomfield’s death, but the Jury did rule his death a Homicide.

The Jury called for expanding mental health liaison teams to other parts of the province like Car 67, a regional program in Langley.
