WestJet mechanics issue second strike notice ahead of Canada Day long weekend

Mechanics for WestJet aircraft have issued a second strike notice and may walk out as early as this Friday.

This comes after the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association (AMFA) resumed negotiations with the airline last week and withdrew its strike notice.

Yesterday the AMFA submitted a proposal that they say would satisfy their members.

WestJet responded by countering the proposal which the AMFA rejected.

The airline says that offer would have given the employees a 22 percent wage increase over 4 years.

The AMFA submitted a 72-hour strike notice and WestJet responded with a 72-hour lockout notice.

Last week WestJet cancelled 40 flights in response to the first strike affecting more than 6500 passengers.

WestJet has not provided details on how this will affect travel over the long weekend.
