Duncan Council looks to add Hul’q’umi’num’ to new welcome sign

A new welcome sign is on the way for the south entrance to Duncan.

The current sign has been in place for 35 years and a staff report to council says that the construction of the multi-use pathway presents an opportunity to replace the sign.

The welcome sign design was originally chosen in 2013 and Mayor Michelle Staples was on the Wayfinding Strategy Committee.

“One of the things we did not consider at all was any sort of Hul’q’umi’num’. Things have changed significantly since then, and I would hate to see that opportunity lost,” said Mayor Staples at the June 17th regular council meeting.

Council directed staff to explore options for adding a welcome in Hul’q’umi’num’ to the new sign.

The original budget for the sign was $19,500, but staff said the budget may have to be raised to accommodate the proposed addition.
